A STORIED PRIVATE MEMBER'S CLUB IN HONG KONG:

The Ladies’ Recreation Club

Founded in 1883, this private club in Hong Kong began as a recreational haven where women gathered to forge friendships and play tennis—then a fashionable pursuit, even in petticoats and long skirts. Since those early days, the Ladies’ Recreation Club has grown alongside the city, expanding its facilities— courts, pools, dining venues and family spaces—to offer an enriching experience for members. Historically led by women, the Club elected its first male President in 2003, marking a new chapter in its leadership.

1884
PHASE 1

Opening & Early Establishment (1884–1915)

The LRC opened on 1 February, officiated by Lady Bowen, wife to Sir George Ferguson Bowen.
The original Clubhouse (later “The Junior Clubhouse”) opened.

PHASE 2

Post‑War Expansion & Sporting Identity (1949–1968)

The main swimming pool opened on 30 April, quickly becoming as popular as tennis.
The LRC Team celebrated victory after winning the Ladies' B Title against Club de Recreio.
First debenture scheme launched (Then in HK$250 multiples, paid half‑yearly).

Presiding Governor's wife, Lady Grantham opened the Main Clubhouse on 5 August.

Family Clubhouse opened.
The inaugural Baker Cup Tennis Tournament was held.
First LRC swimming team formed with early coaching from parents.
PHASE 3

Modernisation & Member Engagement (1972–1983)

Member Mark Crocker and Member Karen Robertson represented Hong Kong in the Olympics.
Former President, Mrs Dorothy Marchand officiated the opening of the Sports Clubhouse.
New heated swimming pool opened in September.
Cocktails marked the opening of Sports Clubhouse, 26 August.
Family Clubhouse reopening celebrated on 27 November.
Centenary Ball (5 November) held on Courts 5 & 6, followed by the release of the LRC Centenary Book.
PHASE 4

Social & Cultural Milestones (1997–2009)

Handover Ball held on 30 June.
Nicholas Burton elected to become the LRC’s first male President.
May Road Building opened on 9 September.
First Pink Ribbon Tennis Tournament (Rally for the Cure) is held in support of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.
Sundeck overlooking the centre courts is completed.

PHASE 5

Contemporary Enhancements (2014–2020)

Main Clubhouse is reopened following renovation.
Gourmet 10 wine and delicatessen opened.
The Hub (Junior Activities Floor) was reopened in March, followed by a refreshed Fitness Centre in July.
Sports Hall facelift is completed and reopened in January.
